Abstract
Knowledge of Law can prevent a person from becoming a victim as well as an offender. So, it becomes the duty of every citizen of our country to know the law of the land and to obey the same. The basic legal studies are very much essential for the people of this area and to give it a perfect shape Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar is playing a pivotal role.
Introduction
Education makes a man wise and Legal education makes a man a law abiding citizen of the country. Staying in Cooch Behar It was being felt that there was an urgent need of the people of this District to have Coochbehar law college for the betterment of the people who wants to pursue their career in the field of law. Till 2019 there was no law college in Cooch Behar but in the year 2019 under the umbrella of Ashwini Chowdhury Educational Trust, the first law college in Cooch Behar was established. The primary focus of the Institute is to impart legal education in the most holistic way. Apart from becoming a lawyer, knowledge of law helps us to know the basic legal rights as well the legal duties of the individual.
Basic Rights
When we talk about rights, the first thing that comes into our mind that what are the rights that we being a human can have. The Holy Constitution of India gives us so many rights. Our Constitution has given us the right to equality and right to get equal protection of Law which is mentioned in Article 14 of the Constitution. Under article 19(1)(a) it also gives us freedom of speech and expression subject to reasonable restrictions. The most important right has been protected under Article 21 of the statute which gives us right to life and personal liberty. Right to life covers up a broader ambit under which we can claim so many basic rights related to life. There are so many other rights like Prohibition on the ground of religion, race , caste, sex ; right to practice own religion; right against untouchabilty; right to have education are also provided by the constitution to us. The crystal clear knowledge of these rights can protect the individual as well as the person who are connected with that particular individual from being getting deprived of these basic rights. So, we can say that it is very much essential to study some basic laws to survive in the society. If the abovementioned rights are violated one can directly go to the Supreme Court as well as in High Court under Article 32 and Article 226 respectively.
Important Duties
Apart from that under Article 51(A) of the Constitution of India there are certain fundamental duties which we should perform. We should respect our National Flag, National Anthem; we should defend the country when required; we should maintain integrity, sovereignty and unity of the country; we should protect public property; we should take care of wildlife, forest, rivers; and most importantly we should promote harmony. The abovementioned duties one can perform only when the person will have moral values which may be developed while studying law.
Conclusion
Keeping in view of the above we can say that coochbehar law college in the name of Indian Institute of Legal Studies Coochbehar is spreading legal education through its various legal aid camps, legal awareness programmes and seminars. It aims to impart legal knowledge to the grass root level for the benefits of each and every people of this district as well as it’s adjacent areas to let the people know about the basic rights and duties.
